ANSWER: AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is a support program for grades 512 that prepares students for college. It is aimed at students who are middle-to-low-performing in schools with high proportions of disadvantaged students. AVID provides various types of support, including personal and career counseling, mentoring, and assistance in enrolling in and completing advanced courses. AVID programs have an impressive record in helping students graduate from high school and enter postsecondary institutions. (Specific statistics are given in the chapter.)
