Some answers may include such details as which court is a trial court (U.S. District) and that the other two levels are (mostly) appellate. There are 11 circuits throughout the country. Types of cases heard in federal court/federal court subject matter cases include federal crimes, treason, bankruptcy, admiralty, copyright, patent, trademarks, and cases where there is diversity of citizenship.
