As a rising parcel of air cools to its dew point temperature, condensation occurs, which releases latent heat into the air. Air cools faster prior to the onset of condensation. The rate of cooling is called the dry adiabatic lapse rate. Once condensation occurs, and latent heat is released, the air parcel cools at a different rate known as the wet adiabatic lapse rate.
