The seigneurial system is an extension of the French feudal system and is similar to the manorial system. Landholders, or seigneurs, swore allegiance to the king of France, paid for peasant tenant workers to come to New France to tend their fields, and only allowed their tenants to tend their fields.

The Canadian Shield is made of some of the oldest volcanic rock, the base of ancient volcanoes eroded by continental glaciers over millions of years. The Appalachian Uplands have also been eroded by glaciation, but were formed by subduction, folding, and volcanic action at an ancient plate boundary.
