The U.S. Interstate Highway Act resulted in many people having the option to move away from urban centers into suburban and rural communities. Today a large portion of people in the United States live in exurbs and edge cities rather than in traditional urban cores.

Answer to Question 2

The Rust Belt includes southern parts of New England and manufacturing centers around the Great Lakes. Cities in this region formed the industrial heartland of North America, but are now experiencing deindustrialization as industries' jobs have moved to other regions where labor costs are lower.
