Answer to Question 1

The sovereignty movement is the effort by the indigenous people of Hawaii, the kanaka maoli, to secure a measure of self-government and restoration of their lands. The movement's roots and significance to the people are very similar to the sovereignty efforts by tribal people on the continental United States. The growing sovereignty movement has also sought restoration of the Native Hawaiian land that has been lost to Anglos over the last century, or at least compensation for it. Reaction to the movement has ranged from non-native Hawaiians seeing this as a big land grab and racist to those among the indigenous Hawaiians who see it as just not enough.
