FEEDBACK: Neurotic needs are 10 irrational defenses against anxiety that become a permanent part of personality and that affect behavior. Parentchild relationships will either satisfy or frustrate the child's need for safety. If that need is frustrated, the outcome is neurotic behavior.

Horney believed that any of the self-protective mechanisms could become so permanent a part of the personality that it assumes the characteristics of a drive or need in determining the individual's behavior.
