Answer to Question 1

Olive oil is produced by crushing olives, green or ripe, in an olive oil press. The press
goes back many centuries. The older types of presses have stone grinding wheels which
mash the olives down into a paste. There is a trough where the oil is pressed out of the
mash by the heavy stones. The oil then follows to a drain where the oil is collected. An
olive press in the olden days would have been turned by animals or humans. A modern
olive oil press may have stainless steel rollers and be driven by hydraulic power.
