Answer to Question 1

An extreme in leadership style is the strict authoritarian, aloof chef who rules the kitchen with a
rod of iron. The advantage of this style is good control and discipline over the team. The
disadvantages are resentment, no cooperation, and poor communication with subordinates. These
are certainly not the ingredients of a coaching leadership style in a TQM environment. The other
extreme is the chef who tries to be democratic and wants to be accepted by other team members
as a complete equal. The democratic style promotes a good atmosphere, good communication,
and cooperation. However, the disadvantages can outweigh the advantages because the democrat
is taken for granted, has no authority, and will eventually lose control of the team. Somewhere
between these two extremes is the ideal leadership style.
