Answer to Question 1

Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to produce uncommon results. As the acronym
TEAM says: together everyone achieves more. The development of a team perspective is critical
to creating the synergy that drives total quality. Team-building is the positive driving force
behind continuous improvement. A mature, well-trained kitchen/foodservice team is capable of
making better quality decisions than individuals. The use of a team approach improves the
overall quality of decision-making, and the level of commitment becomes much higher. When
kitchen team members share the process of problem-solving and decision-making, they are more
likely to become owners of that total foodservice organization's plans and do everything possible
to transform the plans into reality. Collective wisdom is virtually always superior to individual
wisdom.

Answer to Question 2

Negative strokes are known as demotivators. If negative strokes are in widespread use in the
kitchen then morale is nonexistent and the leader is probably operating in a theory X modethe
supervisor who leads through fear. If there are no positive strokes available to team members,
then they will work for negative strokes rather than suffer the least acceptable situationno
strokes at all.
