The Family Medical Leave Act permits employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per
year from work for the birth or adoption of a child; for the case of a seriously ill child, spouse, or
parent; or for a serious illness afflicting the worker. Employers must guarantee the worker can
return to the same or a comparable job.
