Answer to Question 1

Unit owners and managers in many multiunit organizations have less buying authority than their peers in other operations. One reason is the need to have products of consistent quality in all units.

One model uses national buying groups (NBGs) to interact with manufacturers, processors, and growers. NBGs purchase products of various types, such as produce, refrigerated and frozen products, and dry goods.

Specialty manufacturers work with NBGs to provide products, such as toys, that are not available from other sources.

Local distributors order and receive products from the manufacturer. They then store and transport them to units.

Unit owners may purchase some products such as dairy, eggs, and baked goods directly from local businesses. Menus in many large, multiunit organizations are developed to minimize this need.
