Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) is the landmark decision where the Supreme Court stated that indigent defendants facing felony prosecution in state courts have a right to appointed counsel. The Supreme Court has further ruled, in the case of Douglas v. California (1963), that indigents have the right to appointed counsel for the first appeal.
