Intensive probation supervision involves small caseloads of fifteen to forty clients who are kept under close watch by probation officers. Its goals are diversion (without intensive supervision, clients would normally have been sent to already overcrowded prisons or jails);
control (high-risk offenders can stay in the community under much closer security than traditional probation efforts can provide); and reintegration (offenders can maintain community ties and be reoriented toward a more productive life while avoiding the pain of imprisonment.
