The United States is a stratified society in which there is an unequal distribution of wealth, power, and prestige. Social classes are segments of the population whose members have a relatively similar portion of desirable things and who share similar attitudes and beliefs. These social classes are typical divided into lower, middle, and upper class, although a great deal of variation also exists within each group. The upper class is made up of a small percentage of households who maintain enormous financial and social resources.
