In Arizona v. Gant (2009), the Supreme Court ruled:
 
  a. when a police officer makes a lawful custodial arrest of an occupant of an automobile, he may alwayssearch the passenger compartment.
 b. police may search a vehicle incident to an occupant's arrest only if the arrestee is within reaching distance ofthe passenger compartment at the time of the search or it's reasonable to believe the vehicle containsevidence related to the offense of arrest.
