Split sentence probation is known as shock probation where the offender is
o sentenced to a specific amount of time in prison or jail, to be followed by a period of probation.
Shock incarceration is when an offender is sentenced to prison or jail with the
o understanding that after some time, he or she may petition the court to be released on probation.
Intermittent incarceration is when the offender spends a certain amount of time
o each week, usually the weekend, in a jail, workhouse, or other government institution.
These split sentences are popular with judges because they combine treatment
o with punishment.
