Answer to Question 1

When inmates arrive at prison, they are stripped, searched, showered, and assigned living quarters. The treatment seems harsh and inhumane, and men often become depressed when they begin to contemplate their sentence and the dangers of prison life. They quickly have to learn the ins and outs of prison in order to survive. They need to adopt a defensive lifestyle to avoid victimization. Most inmates find that the challenges of incarceration increase the difficulties of prison life along with their already limited resources.

Answer to Question 2

Classification of inmates is an important consideration for institutional security. Classification may be both internal and external. External classification determines the level of security and control needed for the incoming prison population. Internal classification determines the cell or housing unit where inmates will be housed, as well as facility programs to which inmates will be assigned. Proper classification balances the security needs of the institution with the treatment needs of the individual. It is appropriate to evaluate the needs of the inmate so they can be placed in the proper institution. Effective classification can reduce prison infractions and create a safer environment for both inmates and staff.
