Students should identify and explain:
(i) Peripheral Membership - maintaining distance between self and those studied, or setting limits by the researcher's beliefs or discomfort with the members' activities.
(ii) Active Membership - the researcher assumes a membership role and goes through a similar induction into membership and participation like a member. The researcher maintains high levels of trust and can withdraw from the field periodically.
(iii) Complete Membership - the researcher converts and goes native. As a fully committed member, the researcher experiences the same emotions as others and finds it very difficult to impossible to leave the field and return to being a researcher.
