Answer to Question 1

Answer: Approach and avoidance are related to basic tendencies that may be rooted in evolutionthe fight-or-flight choice. Approach-oriented people are more likely to fight in search of positive rewards, and avoidance-oriented people are more likely to take flight away from negative consequences.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Approach and avoidance have some overlap with the Big Five. Approach-oriented people tend to be high in extraversion (as extraversion focuses on positive emotion) and avoidance-oriented people tend to be high in neuroticism (as neuroticism focuses on negative emotion). However, approach and avoidance motivation focus more on internal psychological processes, whereas traits such as extraversion predict behaviors.
