Answer: Empirical research has found some evidence for some of the defense mechanisms. However, they are often under different names and work in somewhat different ways than Sigmund Freud hypothesized. There is considerable evidence for reaction formation and denial, and some for projection, but little for displacement or sublimation.

Answer: 1) Affiliative humor makes others laugh and brings people together. 2) Self-enhancing humor is used to help someone look and feel better. 3) Aggressive humor mocks or teases others. 4) Self-defeating humor is used to mock oneself.
