Answer to Question 1

Self-awareness is understanding the internal sensory, cognitive, and emotional processes. Partner awareness involves knowing what your partner is experiencing in terms of his/her self-awareness. Relationship awareness shifts the focus to the interactional patterns of the couple or family. Topical awareness focuses on topics of everyday life and finding out about one's interests.

Answer to Question 2

The benefits are awareness, development of goals, building couple- and self-esteem, and prevention. The negative effects include the idea that the outcome may be illusionary or temporary, not enough emphasis on the individual difference, divisive influences, and rigidity in the couple's communication patterns. In addition, a failure to follow through on new techniques may lead to guilt or resentment.
