The joint conjugal relationship is where the balance favors the us. These couples are close emotionally and share most areas of their lives. Separated conjugal relationships are where the balance favors the individual. Such couples usually have separate leisure activities and friends.

The characteristics are a commitment to each other, appreciation of all family members, good communication, spending time together, building a value system, dealing with problems constructively, resilience, and self-efficacy. These ideal characteristics provide couples and families a direction for change in their relationship.
