Answer to Question 1

ANS: F
The increased presence of carbon dioxide at deep depths translates into more carbonic acid. The
acidity compounded with increased solubility at cold temperatures causes calcium carbonate to
dissolve at faster rates than normal. This is why calcareous oozes do not form below the calcium
carbonate compensation depth (about 4,500 meters). Information can be found in the section Pelagic
Sediments Vary in Composition and Thickness.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: T
Some of the finest clays just circulate throughout the ocean. Eventually, these particles will stick
together a bit and sink to the bottom. Information can be found in the section Sediments May Be
Classified by Particle Size.
