Answer to Question 1

ANS: T
The wavelength of light determines its color: shorter wavelengths are bluer, longer wavelengths are
redder. Water rapidly absorbs nearly all electromagnetic radiation, only shorter, blue and green
wavelengths pass through water in appreciable quantities. Information can be found in the section
Light Does Not Travel Far through the Ocean.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: F
The latent heat of fusion requires the addition of 80 calories per gram to transition from liquid to solid.
There are only a few hydrogen bonds being broken in this process. The latent heat of vaporization, on
the other hand, requires the addition of 540 calories per gram for a water to become water vapor. The
difference is attributed to the high amounts of hydrogen bonds that need to be broken. Information can
be found in the section Water Has Unusual Thermal Characteristics.
