Answer to Question 1

A

Answer to Question 2

A gyre transports heat from lower latitudes resulting from an excess of solar input to cooler, higher latitudes where there is a deficit of solar heating. Western boundary currents transport warm water from the equator toward the poles whereas the eastern boundary currents transport cool water from the poles toward the equator. Gyres exist to balance the Earth's heat budget by redistributing heat from lower latitudes to higher latitudes.
