Answer to Question 1

Diurnal tides occur once daily. There is a single high tide and a single low tide each lunar day.
Semidiurnal tides happen twice a day. There are two high tides and two low tides a lunar day. The low tides are nearly equal in size, as are the high tides.
Mixed or semidiurnal mixed tides also occur twice a day. These have high and low tides that are significantly different in height from each other. These unique tides are formed from diurnal and semidiurnal tides blending together in the region.
The shape of the ocean basin or the position of the landmass in relation to the tidal wave can affect the type of tidal pattern that coast receives. This can also affect the height of the tides.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
