Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
The continental volcanoes are a sign of convergent plate boundaries. This particular convergent
boundary occurs because the seafloor is being destroyed at a subduction zone. The dense oceanic
lithosphere plate subducts beneath the North American continental plate. Information can be found in
the section Plates Interact at Plate Boundaries.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: D
Scientists used various aspects of research to confirm the presence of layers within the Earth. They
were able to confirm their theory of layers with information collected during an earthquake in Alaska
in 1964. There were 800 stations that recorded information on the waves form the earthquake.
Information can be found in the section The Study of Earthquakes Provides Evidence of Layering.
