Explain why only non-enolizable aldehydes and ketones can be used in the Perkin reaction.

Question 2

Propose a synthesis of the molecule below starting with maleic anhydride and one of the terpenes used in this experiment. You may use any other reagents to complete the synthesis.

Question 3

Write the product of the reaction between myrcene and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxyl ate (Equation PE26.4). If this product is heated in the presence of palladium on carbon, a new product is formed. Propose a structure for the product. Hint: Refer to Experiment 17.

If enolizable aldehydes or ketones are used, they can react with non-enolized carbonyls. This would lead to a mixture products and consumption of the aldehyde/ketone reactants in secondary reactions.
