Answer to Question 4

The prerequisite for the oxidation of alcohol to a ketone or an aldehyde is the presence of a free hydrogen atom on the carbon-bearing hydroxyl group. In tertiary alcohols, the carbon bearing the hydroxyl group is bonded with three more carbon atoms but not to the hydrogen atoms. Hence, tertiary alcohols are resistant to oxidation as they cannot form any additional carbonoxygen bond.
