Answer to Question 1

The given reaction is an example of an acid-catalyzed reaction. Alkynes, in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid and Hg(II) salts as catalysts, undergo the addition of water. In terminal alkynes, the addition follows Markovnikovs rule. According to the rule, the negative part of the addendum (hydroxyl group) is added to the part of the carbon atom that is more alkylated.
