Answer to Question 1

The four waves are: (1) anarchist, which predominated during 1880s1920s. Pure anarchy requires an absence of a central government and people who respect and help each other; (2) colonialism began in the early modern period (15001800) when powers used their military might to impose their will on other parts of the world; (3) the new left wave (1960s1990s) saw America and its allies engaging in a form of imperialism and were opposed to it. They saw revolution as the way to reform governments, but were very unsuccessful; and (4) the religious wave began in 1979 during Iran's Islamic Revolution and continues. It is fundamentally, but not exclusively, Islamic in nature. Its ultimate goal is a world-wide Islamic religion entwined with Islamic government.

It is helpful to have typologies in regard to terrorist actions because it organizes a mass amount of information. Once the information is organized it is easier to understand and learn from. Although these groups are not perfect and they do provide information that may aid in the reduction or prevention of future terrorist acts. They allow us to see patterns, and locate similarities and differences.
