Opera came into prominence in the nineteenth century and developed as a hybrid
from from several regional forms brought to Beijing in 1790 to celebrate the emperor's
birthday.
A theatrical rather than a literary form, a Beijing Opera performance usually comprises a
series of selections from longer works.
A performance also includes acrobatic displays.
A text is merely an outline for a performance and the author is not even listed on the
program.
All of the plays have a happy ending.
Each troupe has its own version of the plays they perform.

A program consisted of one play of each of the five types.
Each Noh script is very brief and does not emphasize storytelling.
Noh is a musical dance drama that evokes an emotional state and mood.
The performers are made up three sections: actors, chorus, and musicians.
The actors are divided into those who play the secondary characters and their followers
and those who play the main character and the main character's followers.
This last group wears painted wooden masks.
Costumes are rich in color and design, based on the official dress of the fourteenth and
fifteenth centuries.
The stage is divided into three areas, although none is separated architecturally, except by
pillars.
The stage has two entrances
