Answer to Question 1

D

Answer to Question 2

a. The text is not real explicit on this, but it is the one molecule that can be used by all cells in the body. Other texts use the term universal energy currency for cells.
b. ATP is only hydrolyzed slowly in the absence of the correct enzymes. This means it is a stable energy storage molecule and the release of its energy can be carefully controlled.
c. The amount of energy associated with the phosphate linkage is an intermediate value: small enough that exergonic reactions with enough energy to drive ATP formation readily occur; and large enough to provide adequate amounts of energy for the biochemical reactions that need to be driven. Also the amount of energy released is not so large that it would generate excess heat and cook the cell.
