couture is made-to-order out of very expensive fabrics with fine handwork, prt--porter is ready-to-wear which is made in standard sizes, can be purchased off the rack, and worn immediately

small store owner often assumes diversified responsibilities; in large store, executives are in charge of each area of responsibility; a small store can cater to a particular clientele with merchandise from small manufacturers
