There are a variety of things to consider. These include the environment (e.g., carpeting, seating, use of chairs, distractions), the children (i.e., development, interest, knowledge), the story (i.e., topic, relevance, age appropriateness), censorship issues, and the presentation (i.e., motivation, use of voice, purpose for using the story). One should also be aware of practices such as Cambournes Conditions for Literacy Learning, which will help all of those in the literacy environment fulfill roles and provide opportunities to support literacy. These include immersion, demonstration, engagement, expectation, responsibility, approximation, use, and responsibility.
