Answer to Question 1

The ability to learn to communicate through signing gives preverbal children the opportunity to participate and decreases their frustration level. Signing has been found to be a major source of reducing tantrums and stress for very young children. Another benefit is that children who use signs at this early stage of development can increase their cognitive abilities. Communication like this has also been shown to increase the bonding level of the child and the person communicating with the child. In fact, when babies communicate by using signs, they are much more likely to engage those they are communicating with and to form a reciprocal relationship.

Answer to Question 2

PITC suggests a three-step approach for the responsive process:
1 . Watch the child for both verbal and nonverbal cues.
2 . Interpret the child's message and ask questions to clarify.
3 . Adapt actions to what are believed to be child's needs and check for response.
