Answer to Question 1

If the illness requires the administration of medication, there are special procedures that should be followed. In some states, administering medication is prohibited. Teachers in preschools and family child care homes should check with the local licensing agency. There should always be a policy on administering medication, and it should be shared with the parents if it is appropriate in the state where care is taking place. Teachers should no longer give cold and cough medications to children under the ages of two yearsbecausethey are not recommended by the FDA. The most common errors with medications in the early childhood education environment are missing the dose and medications not being brought back to the care site so that it can be administered after the first day. If in liquid form, medication should be measured out

Answer to Question 2

The teacher who recognizes serious symptoms knows when to call a parent and when to exclude the child from the early childhood education environment. This is an issue because it has been reported that less than 40 of early childhood education teachers are familiar with the AAP/APHA guidelines for exclusion. Teachers are more likely to use exclusion more than is necessary and might be more likely to exclude due to perception of risk.
