Show an interest in literacy pursuits.
Be responsive in speech.
Encourage play with peers.
Create a secure home where feelings and opinions are accepted.
Be a good model.
Listen closely.
Permit child exploring under supervision.
Enjoy new and novel adventures.
Read and provide books and quiet settings.
Have confidence and patience and encourage language.
Read yourself.
Develop the child's positive attitude toward reading.
Since the child is learning to read from birth on, the literacy experiences a parent provides at home will influence early literacy.

Research, the No Child Left Behind Act, standards, state mandated curriculum, parent's priorities, the awareness that many children learn to read with difficulty, and the accreditation of teacher training programs, NAEYC Standards for Professional Preparation.
