Answer to Question 1

Children need to learn from the beginning that art materials are never put in one's mouth nor eaten, and
separating these two activities is one way to do this.
1.Avoid art materials that closely resemble foods or smell like foods.
2.Completely separate the areas that are used for food and art.
3.If the children will be making something from a food and eating it, it should be called cooking and
done in the cooking area.
Never eat on tables that have been used for art projects. If tables must be used for both purposes,
4.give the children trays on which to do their art, or cover the tables with plastic tablecloths when eating on them.
5.Enforce the rule that no art material is ever tasted, eaten, or drunk.
6.Supervise children, and do not let them put their fingers into their mouths when working with art materials, or before they have washed their fingers.
7.Mix and store art materials in containers that are visually different from those used for food. If a food container is being reused, cover the outside with a label, or paint it.
8.Insist that children wash their hands after they finish using art materials and before they work with foods
