Answer to Question 1

ANSWER: Children confuse fantasy with reality because they believe what they think is true, whether or not it is true in reality. Read, Gardner, and Mahler (1993) explain further: Children need help and time to make the distinction between reality and fantasy without having to reject their fantasies. They have a right to imagine and to create fantasies as well as a need to learn to identify reality.
Beginning at around age five or older, children understand when they are pretending and when they are in the real world. Their understanding is sometimes very sophisticated.
