First, the student must already know how to perform the targeted behavior. A consequence must then follow or be linked to the behavior. A reinforcer, such as allowing free time for finishing an assignment, follows the behavior to maintain or increase it. Finally, the reinforcement must occur directly after the behavior in order to be most effective.
