Answer to Question 1

Answer: ACh is formed from choline and acetyl-CoA in the presence of choline acetyltransferase. ACh is released into synapses and has effects at 2 receptor types: nicotinic and muscarinic. Action potentials release ACh; botulinum toxin prevents ACh release; black widow spider venom stimulates ACh release.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Several mental disorders are related to reduced brain levels of serotonin (e.g., depression). Blockade of serotonin reuptake increases synaptic transmitter levels, which would be expected to ameliorate such disorders.
