Although the majority of patients respond well to L-Dopa initially, after about 3-5 years on L-Dopa therapy, the drug begins to lose its effectiveness. Sometimes, the responses of patients fluctuate abruptly between symptom control and no control; this pattern is often referred to as the on-off phenomenon because the control is switched on and off like a light.
