Ships had been the principal mode of international transportation for over 5,000 years and continued to hold sway well into the 20th century. However, once jet aircrafts made air travel swift and affordable, the airlines eclipsed ships for transportation purposes. At that point, shipping companies relinquished their role in transportation and became cruise lines that solely served leisure vacationers.
