Location, price, and consumer preferences.

This was probably just happenstance since the technology was just as available to hotels at the time that American Airlines built the first revenue management system in travel and tourism. However, airlines, which have historically been less profitable than hotels, in general may have felt a bit more urgency in maximizing revenue.
