Contiguous territories involve countries joined to one another as in U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada. Tourists, especially beginners, are more likely to visit new places closer to home because the cost of travel is usually lower and they may be a bit nervous about visiting overseas destinations at first.

Due to their geography, Spain, China, and the United States have relatively few arrivals in transit to another destination.
