Students should be able to identify the antislavery focus of the party, but a better essay will also mention that there were varying opinions of how to deal with slavery. Good students will cover these viewpoints and also demonstrate how they affected the party's inner workings. But students should also look at some of the economic policies of the new party, including its emphasis on free labor and industrialization. Finally, students should explain how the party worked to win votes in 1860, especially in areas where the party was viewed as being too interested in helping blacks at the cost of whites. Finally, good students should be able to address how the new party fit in with the emerging industrial society of the North and how this appealed to some voters.
