While New Englanders opposed the war, other American groups with sectional economic interests, particularly those who advocated for immediate expansion in the West, supported it. Militarily, under siege in both the North and South, the Americans were actually saved by Britain's victory over Napoleon. The war-weary British population pressured their government to sue for peace.
