Answer 1

ANSWER: Most students should start with the defeat of Burgoyne at Saratoga because it indicated that Britain might be unable to win the war. Better students will note that the American victory earned France's open support. It also encouraged Britain to implement its southern strategy that ended in disaster at Yorktown. The best students will conclude that in an immediate military sense, Britain lost the war because its naval superiority could not be effectively deployed.

Answer 2

ANSWER: Students should note a number of reasons why Loyalists chose their course. These might be economic, political, or personal ties to Britain. Also some regions tended to have more Loyalists than others, so students should explain why this occurred. Having established the reasons, students should examine the Loyalist experience in different regions of the colonies. While Tories in New York generally lived comfortably, those in the South fought a vicious guerilla war with their Patriot neighbors. Finally, students must explain how
Loyalists suffered, both economically and personally, as a result of the Patriot victory.

Although the Roman numeral for the number 4 has always been taught to have been "IV," according to historians, the ancient Romans probably used "IIII" most of the time. This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
